1939 V12 414 Head Bolt Torque
Author Last Post
Thank a lot Lynn, that was also what we did. We went till 35 and it felt pretty good by a mechanic feel by hand. Tomorrow we will do the drivers side head , and go for you method. But we can assume 40 will be the maximum stage of torque for alluminum head?
That is what we will keep in my mind.
the weather in the Netherlands is pretty stormy, so I do not think we will drive her out of the garage tomorrow. But she will be ready for it end of the day.
Lets hope it fires right back up after 20 years of sitting in a musuem.
Is it recommanded to flush the gas system?
the carburator has gotten a good clean anyhow

If you look on the chart on this link https://www.portlandbolt.com/technical/bolt-torque-chart/ the value for a 3/8 "grade 8" is 44 lbs. I'm not sure the studs are grade 8 from the factory. I would hope so but if I remember right the grading of bolts was started during WW-II or sometime shortly after, at least the marking of bolts. I would try 35 and see how they feel and if you don't think you are getting any stretching go to 40.

PS off the top of my head I  am not sure if the studs are 3/8 or 7/16.

I am happy to announce we are almost ready to put the aluminium heads back on my 1935 K model. We did a good revision, all 24 new valve springs (1 was broken , so we had to play safe on all the others), 2 new headgaskets, and both sides got a head restoration

So now I also have the famous question , again:
What is best end - torque for the alumium heads.

After reading all the previous info, 40 foot pound torque seems safe and advisable.
Can anyone confirm this again? So zephyr v12's have the same torque as our large V12 engines?
attached are 2 pics, one of the head now , ready for the new gasket!
Hope someone reacts soon, as we will be working on the car coming weekend!
thanks all
Hi Lew
What edition of Motors did you find that? I couldn't find any thing in the 7th & 9th editions but did in the 16th edition. I have attached a page from it. 40 lbs just seams a little light to me.

Please see the photo from a Motors Manual
Cheers,

Hi
I checked all the sources I had, motors manuals included and could not find anything that specified a torque for "K" models. The torque stated in the Motors manual is for the Zephyr not "K". I send John Kocsis (he rebuilds engines for the late Ernie Foster) an email and he recommended 55 ft.lbs. In one old book I have it talked about torquing the head on a "K" and it says that the manufacture does not have a torque sequence but start from the middle and work out, but doesn't list a torque.

My 1939 Motors Manual states:
Lincoln All
Aluminum Heads : 40 foot pounds
Cast iron heads : 50 foot pounds

Hope that helps!

PS
Would you happen to know a source for side mount mirrors? My '36 K is a bear to back up, not to mention change lanes.
I am having the same problem. Did you ever get an answer for the head bolts?
My brother and I are unable to find a document which states the correct torque specification for the cylinder head bolts. I have purchased many shop manuals and this spec. is always blank.
