29 Working Speedometer, or Potmetal (stem) Repair ...
Author Last Post

Sorry, sold.

I'm interested if it is still available. I welcome a reply if able. Thanks, Bob B

I picked up this instrument panel recently with a clock and speedometer. I only needed the clock, so the panel and speedometer are available for $60 plus shipping if interested.

No, I didn't find one. Could you email me with the details? Thank you so much!

Did you ever find a speedometer? I have an extra working 1929-1930 NorthEast Speedometer if you still need one.

No, I didn't. Sorry.

Thanks, John, that may prove easier than looking through all my Lincoln stuff.

McMaster Carr offers a 12/32 tap if you wish to make your own

Hi, Jeff, did you find another 12-32 nut? I need one, still looking

Al

Allan,

Thank you! I should fix it right, but in the name of moving forward, I just stuck it back in without the stem. :/

Thank you! That drove me nuts (unintended pun)! I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on with that. I only had one, so I put an extra insulator on under it but I too have a sticky indicator. At least I know now! Thanks again.

Jeff, 2 items regarding your speedo issue:

1) my speedometer became unusable some years ago, the indicator would bounce wildly back and forth, and started making noise. I inquired online with several repair shops, none would touch it, referring to pot metal frame warpage and cracking. I did send it to Bill's Speedometer Service - he offered a replacement Stewart-Warner speedo that he claimed was far more reliable. The cable end needed to change, which Bill did. It works fine, fits in the instrument panel, looks almost same as Waltham.

2) Ammeter change - did you fine the 2 #12-32 nuts for the ammeter connection? One id #10-32, easy to find. Need 2 nuts on each stem, so wire connection is tight to stud, but no strain is put on meter case from stud tension. I put mine in with one nut, and it sticks badly, have to bang on the face to free the pointer...

Francis,

Thank you for the offer. Since the trip reset function on my car is "iffy" anyway, I decided to live without it.

Thanks again.

Jeff

I saw a complete L speedo on ebay not that long ago. It was a bit high. I have the back speedo cable connection piece which is potmetal, NOS. I will need to dig that out if it helps, but sounds like you need the actual unit.

I removed my dash cluster to install the correct ammeter and look at the fuel gauge, and had the most unfortunate luck of having it fall off my bench, breaking the back of the speedometer where the trip reset attaches. The back of the fuel gauge is also ruined. Bad deal. Looking for either a tip on someone that can fix the potmetal housing, or a complete speedometer.

Thank you,
